With the theme of “Industry-Academy Integration for Medical Innovation,” this seminar brings together scientific and technological workers, clinicians, and enterprises in the medical device industry and fuels the development of the biomedicine industry of Chongqing through building an exchange platform that pools resources from multiple sources.
Second-largest medical device market worldwide
“Medical devices, as an important part of biomedicine, play a vital role in the implementation of the Healthy China initiative,” said Wang Yunbing, Vice Chairman of the Chinese Society for Biomaterials and Director of the National Engineering Research Center for Biomaterials.

Statistics show that in 2020 the market size of China’s medical device came to nearly 800 billion yuan (about 125.33 billion U.S. dollars), a year-on-year increase of more than 20%, making China the second-largest medical device market worldwide.
In February, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued the 14th Five-Year Plan for the Development of Medical Device Industry, which scientifically planned the innovative development of medical devices. In this regard, China is seizing every development opportunity to grow from a manufacturer of medical devices to a designer of medical devices with strong industrial strength.
Wang introduced that the Chinese Society for Biomaterials was established under the National Engineering Research Center for Biomaterials leadership, built by Sichuan University.
As the only national first-level society of the China Association for Science and Technology in western China, it gathers authoritative experts in biomedicine and engineering research and outstanding talent from the research and production, inspection and evaluation, registration, and approval institutions of medical devices at home and abroad.
Increasing cooperation with Chongqing
“In recent years, with the further development of Chongqing’s medical device, the Chinese Society for Biomaterials has gradually increased its cooperation with Chongqing,” said Wang.
Last November, the Chinese Society for Biomaterials hosted the Chengdu-Chongqing Forum on the Technology-Economy Integration of Medical Device Industry in Chongqing and signed strategic cooperation framework agreements with the Chongqing Economic and Information Technology Commission and the Chongqing Municipal Drug Administration, respectively.
A few months ago, the Chinese Society for Biomaterials also established an industrial innovation service center in Chongqing to provide technical consulting services and solutions for the innovative development, transformation, and upgrading of Chongqing’s medical device.
Wang noted that with the release of the master plan for the construction of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle, the development of the Chengdu-Chongqing economic circle would be further accelerated, and the Chinese Society for Biomaterials will continue to deepen its cooperation with Chongqing.
